Asmi’s next international project is to work in Sudan with a theatre group named Al-Mashish. Currently a performance group, they want to expand their organization to run training workshops with youth and communities on refugee camps to tackle social issues like land ownership, displacement, and HIV/AIDS. We will help them envision and assemble their training program, as well as provide valuable teacher training techniques.
Al-Mashish’s improvisational plays promote dialogue and non-violent expression amongst audience members. The troupe’s work is done in public places, such as markets or town squares. Al-Mashish recently began operations in the various Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps around Nyala.
“Darfur needs cultural aid more than it needs material aid. It’s better to give ideas rather than money. Money runs out, but ideas last.” – Taghreed, a female actor in Al-Mashish
